Seven Days, Seven Songs

#2 CURSE OF AN ACHING HEART - Frank Sinatra

Livening things up a bit, one of my great loves is Big Band stuff from the 1940s-1970s (when it all got enveloped -- sometimes drowned -- in a syrup of heartbroken strings; but if you think I might have a problem with that, please see Day #1).

...

Cliche and obvious as it may be, no one really did this kind of stuff with more overall aplomb than Frank Sinatra. He's The Chairman for a reason. Sure, he sometimes didn't hit a note dead centre but that voice is like expensive lacquered oak panelling and his phrasing is like grand opera.

His "greatest" (read: most famous) collaborations are arguably with Nelson Riddle or Gordon Jenkins but my very favourite song he ever recorded was this one, arranged by the great Billy May for the album "Swing Along With Me". I genuinely can't think of a song whose orchestrations thrill me more: each bounce, pulse, punch and hit is timed to absolute perfection across the particularly buoyant and "zowy" chart.

Way back when, I was an A Level music student at school with some of that same group of reprobates with whom I discovered metal and I did a fair bit of Big Band stuff (vocals, trumpet and I can bang out a decent drum beat: moderately proficient at all; expert at none...). All of which comes flooding back whenever I listen to this tune. I usually put it on repeat it 2 or 3 times every time it pops up in my iPod each time picking out a new bit of the orchestration to follow for the song's duration: Double bass line; trumpets, trombones or saxophones. Each line is a deftly arranged marvel.

Contrary to its glibly cynical hep-cat love song big bang lyrics of romantic disharmony, it's one of the happiest songs ever recorded.

(Apologies for the tiresome biography.)
